¡Llegó FIESTA!

cascaroneClowning Around

Today is the hollowed Spring day anticipated by thousands of school children across San Antonio. Today is Battle of Flowers. It was started back in 1891 a few days after the event was originally scheduled.

Several ladies of San Antonio’s elite had planned a parade and battle of flowers in honor of President Harrison. As often occurs, the Texas weather turned quickly and rained out the event. Not to waste a well planned shindig the event was held anyway, three days after the President had left town. The tradition still continues, just a parade nowadays, and is one of the highlights of Fiesta. Held on the Friday of Fiesta; it is the big event that kick off the ten days of festivities. Most schools and public offices are closed in honor of the many brave and hallowed souls that never died in battle.

Yes, Fiesta has arrived in San Antonio. Sadly I am not in San Antonio. I never got too much in to the event until high school. I went down to NIOSA (Night in Old San Antonio) with my parents to volunteer at a drink booth and had a BLAST! I’m missing the cascarones, King Antonio, El Rey Feo, the food, and the overall atmosphere of the city.

If you’re in town and read this. Smash a few cascarones over some friends’ heads for me.

Sorry for the gap in posts. My computer kind of semi-died last week, so my computing has been a bit sporadic. Something will be up soon.

Musica del Momento

Here’s some music I am enjoying on the FM radio:

Molotov - Yofo (below)

Miranda - Perfecta

Veo Veo - Guajiros

Every blessing You pour out…

Every blessing You pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord
You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name

Yes, thank you to the MacArthur Park Church of Christ in San Antonio, TX. I am now almost fully within my budget. It has been a long, prayer-filled process, but I have been blessed to have received this. Praise be to God.

Happy Buy Nothing Day!

“Time! …is Marching On!”

Analog Time Sand

Well I forgot to mention that Chile has “sprung forward” one hour. Currently we are two hours ahead of CDT (one hour ahead of EDT). When USA time “falls back” there will be an additional hour in between the USA and Chile.

time - is marching on
and time - is still marching on

this day will soon be at an end
and now it’s even sooner
and now it’s even sooner
and now it’s even sooner

this day will soon be at an end
and now it’s even sooner
and now it’s sooner still

“Lo siento”

Well it happened over a week ago, but I may as well let the world know. My television set has died.

Several friends came over to hang out on a Saturday night and they brought their Gamecube in hand. While I was cooking some grilled beef sandwiches, I heard a yelp, and glanced over to see the TV tip forward and smash to bits on the floor. The floor is ok. There was a small electrical fire inside and in the smoke I saw a little tri-colored dot matrix soul dissipate in the air.

Oh well. I don’t have cable.

Cumpleaños Feliz ♫♪♫♪

Wednesday was the birthday of Perla, one of the university students; and Friday was Scott’s birthday. Wednesday we celebrated egg-free, Perla is allergic, with some delicious ice cream. Today we celebrated Scott’s birthday with an asado. Remember my dieciocho post? Chileans love bbqs; and I do too. It was quite good. I’ll let the photos do the talking. I finally loaded some. Enjoy.

Things I Never Talked About

Encuentro Nacional de Jóvenes

A great opportunity to hook up with youth from all over Chile. Plus it was free!

Church Retreat

For three days and two nights the church went South of Santiago to Rosario. It was a good time relax and get to know others outside the jóvenes. Soccer and meditation, what more could you want.

Trip to southern Chile

Oh Jeff had the wonderful idea to take Mauricio, Camilo, and I to southern Chile for a couple of days to get to know each other better. Well, Camilo couldn’t go with us, so that was a drag. We went overnight by bus called “semi-cama” - YOU COULD LAY DOWN WHILE YOU RODE. Fantastic! We stayed in a top-notch hostelería in Villarrica owned by Americans. We hiked on the local volcano, hiked in Huequehue national park, and ate some delicious food. It was a great time out of the city.

Loss of my camera

Sadly I lost my camera in a river at a lovely place named Pucón. I proposed the idea of eating at a German restaurant outside of town, so we went and found the place, it was closed, but we looked around the grounds. We found a river and took some great shots and then it was out of the bag, on the ground, then in the river. It was a sad situation, but humbling. I got over it soon after.

Thai cooking with Jeff and Mark

Oh yes! Cooking with Jeff and Mark returned. We cooked some fantastic Thai food, with crudo, a Chilean raw beef dish, for an appetizer. Pad Thai, Tom Ka Gai, and curry chicken were delicious. Even though being taunted by Scott, he and John came over to crash thee party and eat our food. Oh well, it was fun.

More to come soon.

Pinochet dies and we go on vacation

So I was at the church building on Sunday after our afternoon activity we have with the jóvenes and I call Jeff and he advises me to be careful as I go home as some people may get a bit wild at the news of Augusto Pinochet’s death.

All afternoon people honked their horns as they drove down the streets. The communist youth, whom probably did not even live a day under Pinochet’s regime, gathered in Plaza Italia to celebrate. And, in typical Chilean-communist-youth-style, riots broke out and fires were set.

Jeff, Mark, and I spent the evening eating sushi and fellowshipping with each other. The next day, Monday, there were people on the news still. Yet no clashes of supporters and defectors. No attacks on the government buildings. No, Chile keeps moving on.

Amanda, John, Ryan, and I took a small intern vacation to the coast before Ryan and I go back to the USA. It was a grand time. John and I were the only one’s brave to enter the frigid waters on the overcast day in Zapallar. In all it was quite fun and we finished it off yesterday in Viña del Mar with a fajita dinner.

I hope all is well where ever you are reading this. Cheers.
