Portuguese Learning Online Resources

To augment my study I use several resources. The Internet provides a rich and wide selection of resources to aid one in learning a language. Here are some of the best resources that I have discovered while learning Spoken Brazilian Portuguese.

Conversa Brasileira
Unscripted role-playing videos of Brazilians interacting. Pop-up commentary allows for deeper investigation of what is being spoken. New and very cool. From the University of Texas Spanish and Portuguese Department.

Portuguese Communication Exercises
A compilation of brief video clips in which native speakers of Portuguese from various locations throughout Brazil and Portugal demonstrate various language tasks. Very wide and deep selection of videos. Great resource. Also from UT’s Spanish and Portuguese Department.

Forvo
A continually expanding database of spoken words in over 200 languages. If you have any doubt of how to pronounce it, look it up here. More than 17,000 words and phrases in Portuguese! (My contributions)

Tá Falado
Pronunciation and grammar podcasts from UT’s Spanish and Portuguese Department. Superb for learning pronunciation and why the language is spoken as it is spoken.

Terrabrasilis
From a language professor at the University of Kansas. He has created multiple online in-depth assessment tests. Excellent for determining your language level.

BrazilianPodClass
Marina Gomes hosts an excellent podcast that varies in learning level and content. Each lesson dedicates the second half of the podcast to review and new vocabulary.

Eyes on Brazil
A Californian’s blog about all things Brazil. Very good language and cultural resource. I like his posts on tricky verbs/words (See them here: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5).

Words of Connection
Conjunctions, linking phrases, words of transition, etc* are a must for speaking well and connecting ideas. Found via Eyes on Brazil.
